Cookie policy

A cookie is a small text file kept by the browser at a website's request and sent back on the next request, so that the site can recognise the same browser again. It holds a name, a value and an expiry date (nothing else), and what a site does with this value is the question this page answers.

The list is short, because the site is a set of "static" pages with no account and no advertising (the operators' cards are links, not scripts), and it is complete: the cookies below are the only ones set on this domain, and a reader who refuses the statistics is left with one cookie, the one remembering the refusal. Who we are and what we do with the data are set out in the privacy policy.

The cookies this site sets

The table lists each cookie with the party that sets it, its purpose, its duration and its type, where "technical" means a cookie needed for the site to remember a choice (the answer given to the "banner") and "statistics" one measuring how the pages are read, set only after consent. The names are the ones that appear in the browser's own list of stored cookies, so that you can check the table against your browser.

The consent cookie, ocw_consent, is written when a reader answers the banner, whatever the answer, and it contains only the word "granted" or the word "denied"; without it the banner would appear on every page, which is why it needs no consent of its own (the law calls a cookie of this kind "strictly necessary"). It expires after 182 days, that is six months, and the banner then asks again.

The Google Analytics cookies, _ga and _ga_ followed by the identifier of the "property" (Google's name for the account of a site), are set by Google Tag Manager only after a click on "Accept". They distinguish one browser from another and one visit from the next, for up to two years, the duration Google gives them, and the only cookies on this site to follow a browser across visits.

A click on "Reject" sets none of them and deletes those left by an earlier consent, as the script of the banner is written to do (we have read it, since it is ours). Nothing is sent before the click. Google receives with the cookies the pages viewed and the clicks on the links to operators, as the privacy policy describes.

The form of the newsletter is provided by Brevo and loads only when a reader presses the button on the newsletter page, so that Brevo sets nothing on a reader who never opens it. That is the reason for the button. No advertising cookie, no social button and no other third party loads on these pages, and nothing loads without the reader asking for it.

Once opened, the form may set the "session" cookies (cookies erased at the end of the browser session) that Brevo uses to make it work (the state of the form, a protection against automated submissions), as configured by Brevo and described in its own notice. The notice is Brevo's, not ours, and a reader who wants the names of those cookies will find them there.

Change your choice

The choice given to the banner lasts six months and can be changed at any moment with the button below, deleting the consent cookie and showing the banner again (at once, on the same page), so that a reader who accepted can refuse and a reader who refused can accept. The "Cookie settings" link in the footer of every page does the same, and neither asks for a reason.

A reader who withdraws consent stops the measurement from the next page onwards, and the Google cookies already stored are deleted by the script at the moment of the refusal; what Google received before stays with Google for the retention period set in our account (fourteen months, as the privacy policy says), because a cookie deleted here does not reach back into a server elsewhere.

Deleting cookies in the browser

Every browser lets a reader see the cookies it keeps, delete them one by one or all together, and block those of "third parties" or of a given site, usually under the privacy or site-data section of its settings (the names in the table above are what to look for). We give no instructions by vendor, because the menus change with every version, and the browser's own help pages say where the list is.

Deleting the cookies of this site has one visible effect: the banner appears again on the next visit, as if it were the first, and nothing else changes, since no login, no basket and no balance depends on them! A site that stores nothing about its readers has nothing to lose with its cookies, and this one stores nothing.

This page describes the cookies in use on 9 October 2026, and we update it when a cookie is added or removed, with the date changed at the top of the page and in the signature below; the privacy policy says who we are, which data are processed and which rights you have, and the whole site, this page included, is for adults (18+).
