Thor's chariot crosses the sky and the thunder follows it: this is the image that the Thunderstruck series has turned over for twenty years, and Thunderstruck Gold Blitz Extreme, released by Stormcraft Studios through Games Global on 31 October 2024, is its latest storm. We played it in "demo" mode (free play, with credits that are not money) on Lucky Nugget, a casino of the same stable as Jackpot City.

Our editorial rating is 4 out of 5, given after that demo play for the reasons set out at the end of the page, and it is the only rating among the slot reviews of this site, because the other games were tried for the pleasure of describing them. The figures (RTP, ways, ceiling of the win) are those printed by the game, and the version in use at your casino is the one that pays.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Bonus choice between free spins and the Gold Blitz, four jackpots and multiplier wilds
  • Published RTP of 96.00 per cent (96.25 with the bonus buy) and a ceiling of 5,500 times the bet
  • A mechanism that is readable after ten spins in demo

Cons

  • Very high volatility, with long dry stretches between the large payments
  • Plays much like the other Gold Blitz titles of the studio
  • Drops the Great Hall of Spins of Thunderstruck II

A storm twenty years long

The first Thunderstruck of Microgaming put Thor, his hammer and the "free spins" on five reels at a time when a slot rarely told a story, and Thunderstruck II (2010) added the Great Hall of Spins, in which the player climbed from Valkyrie to Loki, to Odin and at last to Thor. Many still consider that hall the model of the modern bonus.

Thunderstruck Wild Lightning (2021) brought jackpots and multiplied wilds, and the present title adds the Gold Blitz, while the gods remain the symbols that pay most, "stacked" on six reels (the screen itself announces "6 reels with stacked high pays"), with Mjölnir and the runes below them. It is a sequel that keeps the name and changes the machine, and the player who loved the Great Hall will not find it here.

Reels, ways, RTP and volatility

The grid is six reels by four rows, and the winning combinations are counted by "ways" (4,096, that is any run of identical symbols on adjacent reels from the left, whatever the row) rather than by paylines. The theoretical return ("RTP") is 96.00 per cent in the ordinary game and 96.25 per cent with the bonus bought, and the volatility is very high.

Those two figures go together: the RTP says that every hundred staked returns ninety-six on average over millions of spins, while the volatility says how irregularly they come back. In a game of very high volatility they arrive in a few large payments separated by long dry stretches; a demo session shows it within a quarter of an hour (the balance falls in steps and rises in leaps).

The cash symbols, the Blitz and the Gold Blitz

Cash symbols land on every spin of the base game, each of which carries a value (from 0.2 to 20 times the bet in the ordinary game, up to 100 times in the bonus), and a Blitz symbol, the lightning bolt, on the first or the sixth reel collects all the cash in view. When the lightning strikes both outer reels with no cash in view, the game grants a "respin" with a guaranteed prize.

Two "scatters" raise a bonus multiplier by half a point (up to five times), and three or more open the "bonus choice", the device that gives the game its character: free spins with multiplier wilds (2×, 3× and 5×, twelve spins in the round pictured above) or the Gold Blitz, the house's version of the "hold and win".

The Gold Blitz is a counter of three spins that resets whenever a new cash symbol lands, with a prize guaranteed on every spin, as the screen announces, and we would advise a newcomer to try both in demo before choosing! We chose the Gold Blitz more often, because we liked watching the counter reset. It is a matter of taste, not of mathematics.

The Rising Rewards jackpots

A cash symbol that lands without a Blitz is not lost, since it leaves a "token" in the Rising Rewards meter, and the tokens accumulate towards one of four fixed jackpots (mini, minor, major and mega). The launch notice set the ceiling of the mega at 5,000 times the stake; they are not "progressive" jackpots fed by a network of casinos, as Mega Moolah's is, but fixed amounts, worth knowing before dreaming.

The bet range, the bonus buy and the autoplay

The published bet range runs from 0.20 to 50 per spin, in the currency of the account (dollars, euro or pounds), and the arithmetic of a budget deserves one line: a player who stakes 0.20 places five hundred spins with a hundred, while at the ceiling of 50 the same hundred is gone in two spins! The maximum win, if the stars align, is 5,500 times the bet.

The "bonus buy", where the casino allows it (the Gambling Commission of the United Kingdom has forbidden it since 2021), opens the bonus choice at a price shown on the button, with the return of 96.25 per cent. The "autoplay" runs a chosen number of spins with limits on loss and on win, and we would set them before your first spin rather than after the tenth.

Where to play it, and the demo

The game was launched in October 2024 with a month of exclusivity at the casinos of the stable of Jackpot City, Spin Casino, Ruby Fortune and Royal Vegas, and it is now in the catalogue of the casinos that carry Games Global (formerly Microgaming, as our page on Microgaming becoming Apricot tells). Lucky Nugget, where we played, belongs to the same group; it appears on our world list of no-deposit bonuses.

Most of these casinos open the game in "practice" mode after registration, which is the way we tried it, and a free spin received as a welcome gift (the kind that our page on free spins explains, with its "wagering" and its "max cashout") is the other way to see the storm without paying for it with your own money. The casino's own terms prevail if the cards and the site disagree.

Our verdict

Our rating is 4 out of 5, an editorial judgement formed in demo on Lucky Nugget, not a measure of what the game does for a wallet, since no slot can be "beaten" (the RTP sits below one hundred for a reason). On the positive side stand a mechanism readable after ten spins, the bonus choice and the published RTP; on the negative side stand a volatility that punishes small budgets and a family likeness with the other Gold Blitz titles.

For a player who wants to see what Stormcraft has made of Thor, it is in our view the best entry of the series since Thunderstruck II, to be tried in demo first with a budget that accepts fifty empty spins. A player who looks for the frequent small win will find games of lower volatility on our hub of slot and game reviews, and the About page tells the method of these reviews (18+).

Frequently asked questions

No: it keeps Thor, the hammer and the Norse setting, but the Great Hall of Spins of 2010 gives way to the bonus choice between free spins with multiplier wilds and the Gold Blitz, on six reels and 4,096 ways, where the older game had five reels and 243 ways.

The game publishes a theoretical return of 96.00 per cent (96.25 per cent with the bonus buy) and a very high volatility, that is a few large payments separated by long dry stretches. The version in use at your casino is the one that matters, and it is printed in the "information panel" behind the small "i" on the screen.

Where the casino and its regulator allow it, a "bonus buy" button opens the bonus choice at the price shown on the button, returning 96.25 per cent. The Gambling Commission of the United Kingdom has forbidden the feature since 2021, so a player who does not see the button is not looking in the wrong place.

Yes, the demo runs the same mathematics and the same features with play credits, and the only difference is that neither your losses nor your wins are money. The casinos in the cards open it after registration, and a no-deposit free spin, described on our free spins page, is the other way to try it without depositing.
