Tycoon Towers slot review

A luxury hotel is a machine for separating a guest from his money with a smile, and Tycoon Towers, a video slot of Rival Gaming (a studio of 2006 known for its "i-Slots", slots with a storyline), puts the machine on five reels and fifty paylines, with a reception bell for a spin button. We played it in "demo" mode (free play, with credits of no value) before writing these lines.

This page carries no rating, because the slot was tried for the pleasure of describing it, and the figures below (fifty adjustable lines, a coin from 0.01 to 0.25, a ceiling of 600 times the "line bet", that is the coins by the coin value) are those that the game prints. The theoretical return is the exception, since Rival does not publish one, and the 95 to 96 per cent above is the range typical of the studio's video slots.

How Tycoon Towers plays

The reels stand between two gilded columns, with the lobby of the hotel behind them, and the controls are those of every Rival slot: "Select Lines" chooses how many of the fifty lines are in play, "Select Coins" sets from one to ten coins per line, the plus and the minus set the "coin value" between 0.01 and 0.25. "Bet Max" plays everything at once, that is 125 per spin (fifty lines by ten coins by 0.25), "Auto" repeats the spin, and the bell rings every time.

The screenshot shows a demo session at that ceiling, with a balance of play credits that no hotel would honour and a "total win" of 380. The symbols are the staff and the luggage of the house: the tycoon with his cigar, who pays most (600 times the line bet for five), a housemaid, a hotel worker, a bank card, a pink suitcase, a "do not disturb" sign and the card values from nine to ace.

The sticky wild and the re-spins

Wins run from left to right, and the only feature of the game is the "sticky wild" (a joker that stays where it landed for the next spin). Whenever the wild helps to complete a winning line, it locks in place and the game grants a "re-spin" (a free turn of the other reels) at no cost. There is nothing else.

If another wild lands in a win during the re-spin, the game grants another one, so that a lucky cluster of wilds can chain three or four turns together, the only moment in which the balance moves by more than a few coins. There are no free spins, no pick rounds and no multipliers beyond the wild's help, which leaves a game easy to pick up and light on drama, like a hotel bar at four in the afternoon.

One example: a player who plays fifty lines with one coin of 0.01 bets 0.50 per spin and has two hundred spins in a hundred of credit, while a player at "Bet Max" bets 125 per spin and has less than one spin in the same hundred! The fifty lines are the trap of the game, since they look like a choice and they are above all a multiplier of the stake.

The return, the volatility and the ceiling

Rival does not publish a theoretical return ("RTP", the share of the stakes returned to the players over millions of spins) for Tycoon Towers, which is a point against the game rather than a detail, since the studios of Europe print the figure in the "help" pages of every title. A player who cannot read it cannot compare, and neither could we, so the 95 to 96 per cent of the facts above is only the range that the studio's slots usually occupy.

The volatility is low to medium, which the demo confirms: the small symbols pay often, the tycoon rarely, the re-spins come in bursts. The balance moves in small steps. The ceiling is 600 times the line bet, that is 6.00 for a line bet of 0.01 and 1,500 for ten coins of 0.25 (a line bet of 2.50), which no tycoon would call a fortune.

Tycoon Towers is a small slot in a big hotel, and it does not pretend otherwise: fifty lines, one feature, a modest ceiling and a lobby drawn with care. In its favour stand the ease of the rules, the re-spins and a coin of 0.01 that keeps the fifty lines affordable; against it, the unpublished return, the missing free spins and a catalogue that few casinos carry.

For a player who wants a relaxed evening at small stakes it is in our view a fair choice among the slots of Rival, to be tried in demo first.
