Mega Moolah above €3 million: the release of Platinum Play in 2015
This article was written in 2015 and we keep it as a record of how the online casinos of that time presented their games and promotions. The operators, offers and figures it mentions may no longer exist or may have changed, and nothing on this page is a current offer. 18+.
This article was first published in 2015 (the original carried no month; it followed the note on the Crazy Vegas freeroll of January 2015), when Platinum Play announced that the jackpot of Mega Moolah had passed €3 million and was "poised" to fall, and we keep it as a record of how a jackpot was sold. The address of this page names Crazy Vegas, whose releases we published in the same months.

What the casino announced
The release called Mega Moolah "the most popular progressive slot on the web", a favourite from its first day (2006, when Microgaming launched it), and said that the moment to play had come because the odds of the jackpot "being struck loose" were "simply amazing". The sentence confuses two things: the odds of a random trigger do not grow with the prize, only its value does.
The "4-tiered jackpot" was a wheel of four prizes, from the Mini starting at 10 to the Mega starting at a million, which grew with every bet placed on the game in the whole network until someone hit it; the Minor (100) and the Major (10,000) sat between them, unnamed in the release. The wheel appeared at random in the base game, more often for those who bet more.
The manager and spokesperson, unnamed in the text, declared himself "exceptionally thrilled" that the slot had grown "to this gargantuan size" and expected it "to burst any day now", which is the sentence of every jackpot release and of no mathematician, since a progressive has no memory and no due date. The sum was real, the day was not.
The casino and its offer at the time
Platinum Play (an operator of 2004 still on our list) claimed more than 650 games, all by Microgaming, the "128-bit" encryption called an industry standard, a certificate of eCOGRA (the body that audits the games of that software) and a "Contact Centre" open at all hours by e-mail, toll-free number and live chat. The claims are reported as the casino made them, since our test came later and in demo mode.
New players could "double their deposits" with a 100 per cent bonus up to $500 (the same figure in euro), spread over two, three, four or five deposits. A player who deposited $100 five times received $100 of bonus five times, and the player who deposited $500 once received the same $500 in one go, so that the novelty was the freedom to split, not the sum!
The "wagering" (the volume of bets required before a withdrawal) was in the terms of the time, which nobody can read today, and it was the figure deciding whether $500 of credits were worth your while. A bonus of $500 with a wagering of thirty times, a common multiple, asked for $15,000 of bets (thirty times five hundred), a year of play for many.
What the jackpot became
Mega Moolah has paid out sums far larger since then: on 6 October 2015 a British player won £13,213,838 at Betway, then the largest jackpot ever paid by an online slot (a Guinness record), which gives the €3 million of this release its true measure. The game is now published by Games Global (the company that took over Microgaming's games in 2021-2022) and still feeds the same four jackpots.
The theoretical return of Mega Moolah is below ninety per cent, since a share of every bet feeds the four jackpots, and that share is the price of the dream: a player who bets $1 a spin for a thousand spins has paid more than $100 for the chance of the wheel. A progressive is the one game a demo cannot show, its wheel paying nothing.
Platinum Play is still on our list, the images lead to it (the link is an affiliate link, as the box above says) and our Platinum Play review tells how we tried it in demo mode and what its package is today, since the terms on the operator's own page prevail over anything printed here. A jackpot release is news until the wheel stops.
The current "free spins" offers, with the wagering counted, are on the free spins page, and the no deposit bonuses of today on the world list. The announcements of those years, including the Gold Factory freeroll of January 2015 that preceded this one, are kept in our news archive, where you can read how the casinos of the time spoke to their players.
