The Break Away freeroll of June 2014 at Crazy Vegas, a €20,000 slot tournament
This article was written in 2014 and we keep it as a record of how the online casinos of that time presented their games and promotions. The operators, offers and figures it mentions may no longer exist or may have changed, and nothing on this page is a current offer. 18+.
This article was first published in June 2014, when Crazy Vegas, a casino of the Vegas Partner Lounge group that no longer operates under that name, announced its monthly "FreeRoll" (a slot tournament with free entry and a prize pool paid by the house) of €20,000, with a first prize of €4,000, which we keep as a record. The figures were also quoted in dollars and pounds.
What the casino announced
It was "FreeRoll tournament time again", the release said, and the players were "in for a rewarding treat": the monthly slots tournament offered a share of the €20,000 pool for the best placed, and best of all the entry was free, so that the overall winner pocketed €4,000. The adjectives were the casino's, the figures too; only the second kind can be checked.

For the first time the tournament was hosted by Break Away, a video slot of Microgaming whose theme was ice hockey, with five reels and 243 "ways to win" (a combination pays when the symbols fall on adjacent reels, whatever the row), which the release described as quick-paced and equipped with a full team of special features: scatter pays, "Rolling Reels", "Smashing Wilds" and stacked wilds.
Three, four or five scatters opened 15, 20 or 25 free spins, in which the Rolling Reels (the winning symbols vanish and others fall in their place, with a multiplier that grows at every consecutive win) could reach ten times the bet. A feature of the kind changes the rhythm of a game, not its theoretical return, which the help panel of the slot printed and the release did not.
Dates, entry and the welcome package of the time
The tournament ran from Friday 6 June 2014 (18:00 GMT) to Friday 20 June 2014 (22:00 GMT), registration had opened on Monday 2 June at one minute past midnight and stayed open throughout, and every member of the casino could take part without paying, which is what "freeroll" meant in the poker rooms from which the casinos took the word. The leaderboard, not the balance, decided the prizes.
New players could join the freeroll after a "quick and easy" registration, with a welcome package of €500 over the first three deposits: 100 per cent up to €150 on the first, 200 per cent up to €100 on the second and 50 per cent up to €250 on the third. A player who took all three tiers deposited €700 (150, 50 and 500) for €500 of credits.
The alternative, the "FreePlay", deserved a calculation the release skipped: on a slot that takes a spin every four seconds (fifteen a minute), an hour allows nine hundred bets, so that €900 of the €3,000 at €1 a spin were played before the clock, not the balance, ended the game! The "wagering" (the bets required before a withdrawal) and the share to keep were in the terms, the whole offer.
The rest was boilerplate: more than 650 games, all by Microgaming, a banking page from credit cards to "web wallets", the "128-bit" encryption called an industry standard and a multilingual support team around the clock, claims that we report as the casino made them, since we never tested Crazy Vegas. The casino belonged to Vegas Partner Lounge (VPL), the group of Golden Riviera.
Seen from 2026
Crazy Vegas, Golden Riviera, Casino-Mate and Maple Casino were Microgaming casinos which no longer operate under those names, and none of them is among the operators we work with today; the freeroll of June 2014, the 3-tier package and the FreePlay hour no longer exist, and the figures above are testimony. Microgaming's games, Break Away among them, have been published by Games Global since 2021-2022.
The multiplayer slot tournament survived the casino that hosted it, since the lobbies of today still run "freerolls" of the same kind (a leaderboard, a free entry and a pool paid by the house), where the price is the time you spend and the bets you place to climb. The leaderboard rewards volume, and volume is what the house edge feeds on.
The images on this page link to Platinum Play, a Microgaming casino of those years, still among those we present (an affiliate link, as the box above says), whose review tells how we tried it in demo mode. That offer was not its own, and its current terms are on the operator's page, which prevails over anything printed here.
A player who wants to compare the offers of today finds the no deposit bonuses on our world list and the current "free spins" offers on the free spins page, where you will find the figures before the adjectives. The announcements of those months, among them the €160,000 win of July 2014 and the Gold Factory freeroll of January 2015, are kept in our news archive.
