The Immortal Romance tournaments of Golden Riviera in 2014: a €30,000 Monthly Monster and a €20,000 freeroll

Historical testimony

This article was written in 2014 and we keep it as a record of how the online casinos of that time presented their games and promotions. The operators, offers and figures it mentions may no longer exist or may have changed, and nothing on this page is a current offer. 18+.

This article was first published in November 2014, when Golden Riviera Casino, of the Vegas Partner Lounge group that no longer operates under that name, announced its "Monthly Monster", a multiplayer slot tournament on Immortal Romance with a pool of €30,000. We keep it as a record of how such contests were sold, with the older release on the August freeroll merged below.

What the casino announced

The tournament promised "seven full days of multiplayer action", from Monday 24 to Sunday 30 November 2014. The pool of €30,000 was to be split equally among the top thirty players (€1,000 each, and nothing to the thirty-first), and the entry fee was €20, with up to ten "rebuys" (a fresh entry at €20 each, once the first was spent) and up to five "continue plays" at €10 each.

The arithmetic deserves a line, because the release did not give it. A player who used every option paid €20 for the entry, €200 for ten rebuys and €50 for five continue plays, that is €270 for a chance at one of the thirty prizes, while the pool itself equalled the entry fees of one thousand five hundred players (thirty thousand divided by twenty), before a single rebuy!

Max Stern, the casino's manager and spokesperson, wished "best of luck to everyone taking part" and called these contests "a real highlight of our gaming calendar", words that belong to the record and say nothing about the odds. The casino, like every house of that period, spoke of atmosphere where a player would rather have known which share of the fees went into the pool.

Immortal Romance, as the two releases described it

Immortal Romance was a video slot by Microgaming with five reels and 243 "ways to win" (the system in which matching symbols on adjacent reels pay regardless of lines), built on a story of vampires and werewolves. It had "wilds" (the symbol that stands in for the others), "scatters" and the Chamber of Spins, where the free spins were chosen among the characters of the game.

The two releases did not even agree on that chamber, which offered "four different free spins packages" in November and "five free spins bonuses" in August; the game as it was played had four, one for each character, from the ten spins of Amber to the twenty-five of Sarah (the pictures show Troy and Sarah). The Wild Desire feature, which turned up to five reels wild at random, completed the apparatus.

The August freeroll of the same year

The older release, kept below the first, announced the monthly "FreeRoll" (a tournament with free entry and a pool paid by the house) of August 2014. The prizes were €20,000, with €4,000 for the winner (a fifth of the pool), and registration opened on 4 August at 18:00 GMT, while the contest ran from 8 August at 18:00 to 22 August at 22:00 GMT.

Free entry did not mean free play, since the points of a leaderboard came from bets placed at the player's own stake and risk; "free entry and a shot at €4,000", said Max Stern, "what's not to love", a question that the release answered on your behalf. In our view the price of a freeroll is the volume, and the prize goes to one player in a field that the release never counted.

The welcome offer of 2014, and its arithmetic

New players were offered up to $1,400 over their first three deposits (also quoted in euro and pounds): 100 per cent up to $150 on the first, 25 per cent up to $500 on the second and 50 per cent up to $750 on the third. It was the same package that the casino attached to its Max Damage release of the same month, while the August text spoke of "a choice between two welcome offers" without describing the second.

A player who wanted the whole $1,400 had to deposit $150, then $2,000 (a quarter of which is $500) and then $1,500 (half of which is $750), that is $3,650 of his or her own money for $1,400 of credits. The "wagering" (the volume of bets required before a withdrawal) came on top, unmentioned in either release, and the headline figure was the only one that appeared in large type.

Seen from 2026

Golden Riviera belonged to the group known as Vegas Partner Lounge, with Crazy Vegas, Maple Casino and Casino-Mate, none of which operates under its name today. It is not among the operators we work with, and the tournaments, the fees and the package of 2014 no longer exist in any form. The figures above are testimony, not an invitation.

The game outlived the casino: Immortal Romance passed with Microgaming's catalogue to Games Global (2021-2022, as our page on Microgaming becoming Apricot tells) and is still in the lobbies of the casinos of that software. There you can read its paytable, as the players of 2014 could. We have no review of it, and the slot hub gathers the games we have played in demo.

The images on this page link to Platinum Play, a casino of the same software which is still among those we present (an affiliate link, as the box above says). Its current terms are in our Platinum Play review, and they prevail over anything printed here; if you want to compare the offers of today, the world list is the page, and the other announcements of those months are in the news archive.
